Thornbury

Thornbury is knit on the bias; starting in one corner, and increasing on every right-side row. It is knit even through the body, then decreased to the point on the far end. The resulting shawl or scarf is a parallelogram rather than the usual rectangle. The Thornbury pattern is written as both a scarf and a stole. There are more photos of it on my web site, and the pattern can be purchased at Patternfish.

The oriel stitch used in this design is very old. It's named for an architectural element of the same name found in Gothic Revival structures in the United Kingdom. In architecture, an oriel is a bay window that projects from an upper floor that is supported from below with a bracket or corbel. Unlike a bay window, it does not itself extend to the ground. The windows in the oriels were often decorated with leaded or stained glass in beautiful designs.

New Shawl

I wanted to share some pics of my new shawl. It's not been named yet. I had a competition on my blog last week but I can't decide between the entries. The yarn is my own YarnAddict Supreme Lace which is a merino/silk blend. I added beads to the border. The shawl is knitted in one piece from the centre back.

The pattern will be available from my website and from Ravelry later this week.

Domus Aurea

Domus Aurea, pronounced Dough-muss Ow-ree-ahh, is a shawl I designed with Silk Lace from Claudia Hand Painted Yarns, in Honey. It's fairly simple to knit, with a long stretch in the center that is as near to mindless knitting as lace ever gets. The pattern is written in 2 sizes: scarf and shawl. The pattern is knit from cast on edge straight through to the other side. There is no grafting, no added border.

The pattern is available in my pattern shop, and on Ravelry.

The diamond pattern is created by knitting nupps. They're fairly easy to do. Honest. If you prefer, beads look nice there, too. Instructions for adding beads not included.

This is the Dazzle Shawl, designed by me and the yarn was dyed by me but knitted by my good friend, Pixie, as I didn't have time to do it and I needed a new shawl design for my Lace Variety Club. It's knitted in my Silky Merino, which is a silk/merino blend laceweight yarn with 1200 m per skein.It turned out to be a huge shawl, much bigger than I expected and it's gorgeous. I'm really pleased with it. I must get around to knitting one myself soon. If you're interested in the pattern , it can be purchased from my Etsy shop or Ravelry.

I made this for a girlfriend's 50th birthday:

I made it with Claudia Handpaints Lace Silk, less than a skein and size 3 Addi turbo Lace circs.
The pattern was so easy to memorize that I could do it anywhere, even in the car, which is a nice thing because usually my lace projects have to be done at home. The silk was enjoyable, but I had to get used to it because I knit mostly with wool.

New Midnight Shawl

I wanted to share pictures of my latest lace shawl. It was knitted in just 2 weeks by myself and my test knitter, Pixie, did hers in teh same time frame too. I actually did most of the knitting in the 2nd week as I was in London for part of the first week.

My version is knitted in YarnAddict Exotic Lace (alpaca/cashmere/silk) and has beads added. The beads are added using a tiny crochet hook.

Pixie's version is knitted in YarnAddict Silky Merino Lace and doesn't have beads. Pixie's tension is much firmer than mine and she knitted a shorter version.
I still need to get some better pictures of this shawl but weather conditions have been conspiring against me. Today looks hopeful though. It's not raining (yet) but a little dull.

My Swallowtail Shawl

Finally I finished a lace project and can post to this group. I knit the Swallowtail Shawl in fingerweight yarn which was hand dyed. Instead of the nupps, I used size 6 light pink silver lined seed beads. Then, I decided to add a bit more bling and put a bead at the end of the points. The result is not over glaring and very pretty.

Last week, I spent 5 days at a local fair demonstrating spinning with the RI Spinners Guild. This shawl was on display along with other shawls, scarves, socks, yarns we spun, and other items.

The pattern is not difficult once you memorize one repeat of the buds, and, then the lily of the valley part. The edging wasn't too difficult either. Here are some pics.

Technically not a shawl, but it is lace and if you add pattern repeats and length, it would be a nice stole. :)

Two Spring Shawls

Here are two triangular shawls I finished in the last few days. The green one is for me; it's Evelyn Clark's Shetland Triangle Shawl from Wrap Style, knit in Berroco Ultra Alpaca Light. The pink one is a gift. It's knit in Malabrigo laceweight; I designed it following the guidelines in Evelyn Clark's wonderful book, Knitting Lace Triangles.

I love the range of lace. The Shetland in Ultra Alpaca Light is warm and cozy, substantial but not heavy. The Malabrigo is as light as air. Best of all, it came out just the right size for the recipient.

This is "Mohana". Monika (www.yarnloopie.blogspot.com) designed this one and had me testknit it for her. It's really great to knit and the mediumweight Fingering Sock yarn from Maggie (www.dyedinthewoolhandmade.com) made this one fast to knit. I used my size 5 (3.75mm) KP options needles for this one and blocked and all finished it measures a good 40 x80 inches. Big enough to snuggle in. The color is called Winter Violet and just down my alley.

The pattern, once Monika releases it, can be found on her blog or over at Ravelry. Just punch in "Mohana" or "yarnloopie" and you'll find it for sure.

This is the Stork's Nest Scarf by Nancy Bush, which appeared in the January/February 2008 issue of PieceWork. I used Zephyr and knit a couple of extra repeats to make the scarf longer. Even so, mine came out only 51 inches long (the one in PieceWork was 70 inches long, but it was knit with cashmere).

The pattern opens up beautifully after blocking. Here is a before blocking shot:

When you block a piece like this, you realize once again why you knit lace!

It seems like I`m not the only one getting some lace done theese days. I cast on for this one thursday and came sunday I was done. I think I will continue knitting lace trying to get to blocking sunday eve `cause monday morning was a piece of cake when I knew I could un pin a brand new shawl. Everything really Do look better in lace.

The shawl is a Swallowtail and is knitted in dark brown Navia uno on 4,5 mm bamboo needles.

I made a couple of more repeats of buds to make the shawl a bit larger.

Heartland Lace Shawl

I started on the Evelyn Clark Heartland Lace Shawl created for Wild Fibers Magazine. I was able to get a free copy of the pattern, but I think the pattern is now being sold as a kit. This is being knit out of 2.1 oz of Tussah Silk that I handspun on my Babe spinning wheel. I am knitting this on US 4 Lace Addis, which is the first time using this needle. So far so good.

My goal is to finish this by my 34th birthday on May 1st, so I can get started on another shawl. For any further details on the yarn or the shawl, check out the blog.

Amazing Lace - Two of a Kind

This shawl came off the blocking wires today. There will be two versions of this shawl. This version has a leaf lace pattern each side with a flower lace pattern in the middle. The other version will have a leaf lace pattern in the middle and flower lace pattern each side. It's knitted from the top down starting with just a few stitches.

This one is knitted by Pixie in YarnAddict Yarns Cashmere Lace and only used 100 gr. The other version is being knitted in Luscious Lace (cashmere silk) and I'm about halfway through it. The pattern will be available soon and I'm planning to use this design as one of the patterns for my new Lace Variety Club.

Two new shawls

I'm working of re-knitting some of my more complicated designs because when I first made them I took really bad notes. I never thought I'd ever be publishing patterns.

Vacation knitting

After a lovely week on Lanzarote celebrating my mothers 50th birthday I found myself finishing up a Luna Moth shawl for my daughter. I found the knitting rather annoying at times, being unable to really see the pattern in the shawl. But after blocking... Wow! I really love it and my daughter maybe more since this is the first time I have knitted her a shawl of her own. About time I`m sure.

I used 2 balls of Drops alpakka for the shawl, app 360 meters. When finished I had 4,5 meters left of the yarn. Close call. The shawl is rather small, only about 130 cm across the longest side, but it?s perfect for my nine year old.

I have been a very big fan of Evelyn A. Clark who, is the inspiration behind this shawl, and I am sure, for many more shawls to come.

This shawl is very pretty, and I was intimidated by the pattern because it was all written, but the pattern repeat of each row is not terrible.

I had to block the edging separately because I wanted the edging to open rather than have that sharp triangular shape.

This is the first shawl finished in 2008. I hope I can finish as many shawls or projects as I can. Because there are so many beautiful patterns out there.

Garden Party shawl

I actually finished this shawl in January, but my test knitters (hi Angelika!) only just finished with me, and let me release the pattern today. It's a triangular shawl, but it's knit differently than normal. It starts with a motif that goes up the center to the top, is knit down one side, then the other, joined, enlarged, and finally an applied border is added.

It's crocheted, but it's still lace. :)

This is the Blue Curacao shawl from Doris Chan's Amazing Crochet Lace book. Instead of using the suggested yarn, I used Soft Lux from Rowan Classic Yarns in white. It has a gold metallic strand that doesn't show well in the picture.

I also added beads at the scalloped edges to give it a bit more weight. It drapes really nicely and because of the way increases are added at the shoulders, it stays in place while wearing without need for a pin (unless it's windy, that is).

Icarus: The Magic of Blocking!!!

I definitely loved this project, and can't wait to take post-blocking photos! I knew that once I'd gotten the chance to block this shawl, it would drastically different. However, I think I knew that on a purely intellectual level. Once I got Icarus all pinned out, I was quite shocked at the difference. (Just like I am every time I block lace! I really should remember how cool this process is!)

Garden Party Shawl WIP

Here is a quick picture of the test knit I'm still working on for Laura over at fiberdreams.com. Just so everybody can see how far I've gotten on it and what it's going to look like. Of course her pink version is the bomb, but my gold one is not so shabby either. It just doesn't seem to be that big, but this picture is just a quick pin on the bed and not the fully stretched out end product. After 3/4 of the border I finally have the pattern memorized. Well it's about time, I think. I hope to get this done before the new yarn for my next KP project arrives, which should be here by this weekend.

Beaded swallowtail

I almost forgot to post this! Here's my swallowtail shawl that I finished up about a month ago. It's knit from some bfl that I spun up myself. I also used beads instead of knitting the nupps.
Here's a picture of it without flash to show the beads. I couldn't get better pictures since my camera broke after this.
I absolutely love this shawl, it's gorgeous and I'm so proud of it since it's the first thing I've made from yarn I spun myself.

Autumn Blaze/Agneta

Now my Autumn Blaze is finished. It was a fast knit. Even though it wasn't knit anything on it during christmas I finished it in a week. It ain't especially big but beautiful. To bad the pictures doens't make it justice. It's real hard to get good pictures this time of the year. The yarn is Färgkrafts Softblend (colour Coral), needles nr 3.5 mm and coral coloured beads. I wanted to show you all my finished Shaped Triangle Shawl from the book "A Gathering of Lace". It's knitted with 3 skeins of Knit Picks Shadow in Jewel Heathers on their 3.75mm (5) interchangeable needles. I think it only took me a month to finish it and it's going to a dear coworker of mine. Triinu's Vine & Leaf Shawl

This took me quite a while to knit, but it was always interesting. It is knit in lace weight 100% cashmere with U.S. size 5 needles. I did not block it hard because I added to the length and width. It measures 90 inches across and 45 inches long. The color is Dark Natural purchased from Colourmart in U.K.
I would have to look back in my blog archives to see when I started this project. I only know that it took me months to knit. Partly because I had to keep track of every stitch on every row. Other than that, this was not difficult, but it sure looks like it was! I love this one!!

South Seas Stole pattern release

Hi ladies. I recently released the pattern to my South Seas Stole. I asked Danielle if I could share it here, and she said yes!

The model stole is knit with Zephyr Wool-Silk, size 5 needles, both circular and DPNs. It has a crocheted provisional cast on, four different lace stitches in the center panel, beads (optional), knit-on border, and a tiny bit of grafting at the very end to join the two ends of the border. You'll need a couple bits of waste yarn for the provisional cast on and a couple of stitch holders. Life lines and stitch markers are optional.

Anne's garden Stole

I have finished my Garden Stole for Anne. My own design but inspired by A Gathering of Lace. For a few hours, after the dyeing, I thought I had completely ruined it because it had started to felt. It survived but lost a bit of stitch definition.

Swallowtail & Shetland

I recently finished knitting the Swallowtail Shawl. I used 1.6 oz of silk of my handspun. I followed the pattern as written because I didn't think I would have enough yarn left, but thankfully, I did.

I have started on a new knitting project from some Superwash merino roving that I handpainted and spun into laceweight. It is a bit loftier than the silk and is at the lumpy, bumpy stage. Here is a picture of it smoothed and pinned out.

I am presently spinning some silk for the Heartland Lace Shawl, also by Evelyn Clark. I've completed 2 Clark patterns. And I have 2 more planned. I am so devoted to her amazing patterns. If you want to read more about my spinning and knitting process, please check out my blog.

Hi Everyone!

I just received my invitation to join this blog (Thanks Danielle!!) and thought that i should write something right away :D
Im veru addicted when it comes knitting lace or shawls...I will put some pictures here from shawls i´ve finished so far, after i find the pics somewhere..
At the moment im knitting a shawl from Victorian Lace Today. The shawl is called Myrtle Leaf Shawl. Sofar i havent had any problems with it, but i have only knitted it like 5 cm :D So the problems will wait for me as i go along :D

South Seas Stole

I just finished this stole of my own design yesterday. I'm very happy with it. There are quite a few more pictures on my blog. It has a total of 5 motifs in it, including the border, and lots of beads. I used a provisional cast on, and grafted the last 13 stitches of the border together to finish it. No binding off (I'm terrible at "loose" bind offs)!

Hemp Forest

I just finished knitting the Forest Canopy shawl (pure joy!), using hemp laceweight to knit with (pure joy--ALMOST). I'm really pleased with it and I'm looking forward to showing it off at a conference next week.

Shawl Suggestions Needed

I'm a new member to this KAL, and need some shawl suggestions. The mother of a close friend was recently diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. I live too far away to bring a casserole to show my support, so I've asked if I could knit her something. My friend, her son, says that he thinks she would like a shawl, and that her favorite color is red. This is where I need your help.

Do you have any favorite small-medium shawl patterns or (red) shawl yarn? I've knit a few simple lace patterns on scarves before, and am up for the challenge of something a little tricky. That being said, I'd like to have a project that I can finish in a timely manner. The last caveat is that I'm in graduate school, so time is a little short, as is my cash flow for really expensive yarn.

Thanks for all of your suggestions, and I look forward to sharing my project progress once I begin!

Icelandic Lace Shawl

This is my latest knitting achievement. It's the Icelandic Lace Shawl. I set up a Yahoo Knit Along for the particular pattern and actually the knit along is still going on. I used Jaggerspun Heather fingering weight yarn in 8 different shades of browns and grays with U.S. size 6 needles. The pattern was originally published in Three Corner Shawls, then again in the July 1996 Piecework magazine.

Interweave Press heard about the knit along so they published the pattern again in the free Knitting Daily newsletter. I would not describe this pattern as difficult and with the different stitches and colors, it was a fun project. We have about 400 participants in the knit along. I was in a hurry because I left some unfinished projects to knit this one. It took me just under 2 weeks to knit.

Kiri shawl finished

I`m totally hooked on the feeling of going to bed with a new shawl pinned down on the blocking bed. This one took me eight days to knit, though I didn`t work on it every evening.

The shawl turned out a lot bigger that I was aiming for, I ended up after blocking on 180 cm, and that`s 10 repeats on the pattern. I made the shawl from a natural white Faroe islands yarn, Navia. I guess I`ve used about 70 grams.

Flechtmuster Tuch/Braided Shawl

Here is the finished braided shawl I knitted with a german KAL. The pattern was available in the Anna magazine 9/2007 and was thanks to the KAL hard to get, especially here in the states. It's so good to have connections :). Kick off for the KAL was the 15th of this month, but since the pattern was here, the yarn was looking at me and waiting for me to cast on I cheated and started on the oh so boring garter stitch part two days early. So it took me pretty much about 7 days to finish the whole shawl. Wow, now that I think about it, not bad at all. And it's so totally wearable for those cooler fall evenings. This might just be one of my favorite shawls to wear.

Victorian Lace Today's Melon Shawl

Anyone who has done Victorian Lace Today's Mellon Shawl understands the sense of satisfaction I'm feeling now.

I just finished the center panel of the shawl!! YAY! And here are some pictures

Details:
Yarn: 15.5 Balls of Plymouth Royal Bamboo yarn
Needles: Size 8 Addis, 24 inches
Modifications: The pattern calls only for six repeats (6 "melons"). That would have made for a really nice scarf so I increased the number of repeats to thirteen
I will add the border as soon as I get it back from the women at Martin McCrea. They are going to dye the shawl in parts: First, the two sides with the lighter dyelot will get dyed then they'll do the center. And if I did the border, that would have complicated things so they'll dye the rest of the yarn.

At 576 stitches a round, my circular shawl is a slow-going project. I can't wait to see it off the needles and all blocked out, but that's a long way off! The yarn is indigo Zephyr and the design is my own.

Faroe Islands Kiri

Yesterday a friend and I took a trip to a smaller city about an hour away from where we lived to check out the yarn stores there, and to my great joy I found laceweight yarns! It was only in unbleached white, about 700 meters pr 100 grams and a mix of wool from the Faroe Islands, Shetlands and Australia. I`m in løøøv. It is called Navia, by the way.

I started a Kiri shawl with it. I guess i`ll dye it later. I am probably going to give this one away to a friend who is having a baby soon and I want to squeeze her for her favorite color to make it just perfect.

I am making the shawl on 4,5mm needles but I think I should have gone down a half size. That`ll be a lesson for the next shawl.

I usually knit in the evenings and sometimes I make stupid mistakes. I have a new sudokupen from Penol that is great for just making a line over the rows I allready made. The pen has a white tip at the other side, like a regular marker, that neutralizes the ink. I love it! I haven`t dared using it in my books yet, but the copys doesn`t seem to suffer any damages. I don`t need to sharpen my pencil and worry about who stole my erasers and the best of it; no rubber residue around the sofa!

Swallowtail Shawl

This is a close shot of my finished Swallowtail Shawl, knitted in Piece of Beauty's laceweight silk. Color is Citrus Blush, a mixture of pinks and gold. It works very well with this pattern, the colors add interest but aren't too busy.

Hi all,

I am back from my vacation and as always work has been crazy. My aunt loved the shawl and she cried when we visited her in Washington. I am now working on two shawls at the present time. First one is from the Heirloom Series from Sharon Miller called the Grey Shawl (HAP), I haven't take any pictures as it is just a small triangle right now. I am using KnitPicks bare lace yarn which is a very pretty cream color, 100% wool for the center which will be a diamond. The borders are the all Shale design with varying degrees of grays.

The other shawl that I am working is the Peddler's Wool shawl from Folk Shawls (Cheryl Oberle), in which I am using a hand-dyed alpaca lace yarn from a gal from Oregon who I had met on line. It is so soft. The main part (top) is a color she calls Autumn, which is yellows, oranges, greens, and brown; very pretty. For the lacer part, I am going to use same kind of yarn, but in a copper color. Since both shawls are in the beginning stage and just garter stitch, I will wait a little while before I take any pictures.

Triinu's Vine & Leaf Shawl

Danielle, Thank you for inviting me to this wonderful blog.
During the Mystery Stole 3, I feel in love with this pattern so I asked the designer if I could purchase it. I was not alone in this pursuit, so she translated it into English and sold it to several of us.
I'm knitting this in dark natural 100% cashmere from Colourmart in the U.K. I found the chart for this pattern a little tricky with the repeats, but with the help of friends that are mathematical geniuses, it's turning out beautifully!
I will probably make another one of these shawls in Handmaiden SeaSilk or Lace Silk next.

Diamond Fantasy again?

I loved knitting this shawl and loved the look on the recipient's face even more. Smile, apparently she had been having a rather bad week and my gift brightened it considerably.

NOW I have been asked to make another Diamond Fantasy this time from commercial yarn for a friend who will be renewing her vows this spring. ( stamps foot and pouts for a moment ) I really wanted to make something different but if I add beads to Tam's shawl... cause I sure can't tell her no pick another pattern I am tired of that one can I?

Introduction/cherry leaf patterned shawl

Hi all!
I`m one of those lurkers finally getting to write my first post.
My "red shawl" with cherry leaf pattern is finally finished and I haven`t taken it off since . The pattern is from Victorian Lace Today and the yarn is Askeladden, a somewhat heavy laceweight yarn found in the basement of a LYS. Unfortunately it doesn`t seem like I will get hold of more of it.

The shawl was a pretty fast knit, I guess, it was my first laceweight project and getting used to the thin yarn took some time. Earlier this summer I made myself a Convertible shawl in alpakka. This was my first "grown up" project and I`m totally hooked. I haven`t been able to knit for some years and it feels like I have to make up for those years, LoL.

I recently finished knitting this scarf - it's 9 inches wide and about 7 feet long :) and it took less than one skein of yarn :D

I knit it out of Spritely Goods yarn in Sylph fine-fingering weight. The colorway is called Globe Mallow.

Pattern was cobbled together myself, combining Dayflower lace with what I think are called leaf shadows. Charting was a pain because the number of rows to chart to get both patterns to end at the same time was 80 rows!

Angel Lace Shawl

We had been busy selling our old place, looking for a new home and packing since end of June. Finally, we moved into our new place on August 1st. The problem is that we downsized 1,000 sq. ft. and we have too many things.

Anyway, I managed to squeeze some knitting time and finisihed this.

It was easy to knit up and I used the beads that were in my stash but they matched quite nicely.

I'm the host of this KAL, and yet I've neglected to post any of the shawls I've knit in the past year or so. I thought I'd remedy that oversight and show you what I've sent out in the past year. I seem to have this flaw where all of my intricate knitting is for other people (something else that needs to be remedied in the near future I suppose). Anyhow, the work that I've done...

The drool over those two shawls is liable to drown me in the meantime... oh well, at least the interim knitting is engaging. :)

Finished Kiri shawl.

After starting, making a repetitive mistake, ripping, then restarting this shawl back in April, I finished it Friday night.

I did extra repeats, and once blocked, the shawl was a couple of if inches shy of eight feet, across the top. The length, from top to bottom point is five feet. Since I'm 5'9", the length makes the shawl dramatic-- like the golden yellow color.
